Miranda Otto is an Australian actress. She was born in Brisbane, where she was raised along with time spent in Newcastle. As a child, she developed an interest in acting through her father, spending weekends with him in Sydney. Together with friends, she wrote scripts, designed costumes, and created small performances, laying the foundation for her future career. She later appeared in stage productions at the Nimrod Theatre, which led to her first film role in the World War II drama Emma's War. In 1990, she graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art in Sydney.
Her international career began to take shape after a small role in The Thin Red Line. She soon landed her first Hollywood role in the thriller What Lies Beneath, where she played the mysterious neighbor Mary Feur.
Otto achieved worldwide recognition as Éowyn in The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, part of The Lord of the Rings. For the role, she underwent intensive training in stunt choreography and horse riding. Her performance earned her a nomination for Best Supporting Actress from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films.
Her performance caught the attention of Steven Spielberg, who cast her alongside Tom Cruise in the sci-fi blockbuster War of the Worlds.
On television, she portrayed CIA station chief Alison Carr in the fifth season of Homeland. She also took on one of the main roles as Zelda Spellman in the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018–2020).
In 2024, she returned to the world of Middle-earth, reprising her role as Éowyn in the animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, where she served as the narrator.
